View Full Version : Kilworth Hill Climb tips
So what are you guys going to ride gear wise. Everyone stand and hammer a big gear or are their any spinners? Does it start on the short flat then run up or does it start at the base of the climb? How far up and over is it? It seemed pretty tough to get 500m out of it? Ill be doing it on my track bike so Im thinking the equiv of 53X25. I dont plan on winning but I would like to beat Payton up. Id hate to run out of gear and have to walk up...

I can tell you from personal experience that one gear is not gonna cut it.
Well I did it tonight a couple of times tonight with 1 gear, 39x25 with running shoes on my look pedals. My daughter did beat me up due to slippage but that was on a road bike. You dont think a 195 lb guy on a 14 lb bike pounding a 53x27 even?

I dunno, I've been wrong before but that course has at least 3 distinct gradients. Start and finish bits are flatter, steeper in the middle, you need to be using the gears to get the most out of it I think. Too small a gear and you spin out before you get to the hill, too big and you bog down at the steep pitch and while it is short, you can lose a lot of time if you are grinding the big gear.
Think I found the gear. I did it 2x this morn and it sucks but it will suck no matter what gear you run. Traffic has been bad there.....aero helmets and skinsuits a must for sure. See you all tonight...
