So what's the deal? You can, without much effort, spend lots of money on wheel bearings, BB, even derailleur pulleys.

Some of you tech weenies out there able to separate fact from hype?

I read an article in Bicycling magazine a few months ago talking about how average joes can ride race rigs almost identical to pros bikes, but with a few subtle differences and one was with running ceramic bearings in the wheelsets. Discovery team riders were saying how much faster they rolled and even to the point where some of the descending was a bit scary fast and in need of some brake management on the straights. But like you said, it comes with a hefty price tag. If I had the money I might consider.
