A salt lick is a combination of minerals and salt in a form of a block. What is it used for? Well, it is used in cattle fields where the cows can saunter up to it a lick it all they want. After many licks the block changes shape and your perspective is limited by your imagination. The unique aspect of these salt licks is that they are died bright blue. This brings me to the way in which I perceived myself after working in the sun all day. When it can time to put on the jersey prior to the race this was the best use I could conjure up in my head based on my out look on the race. I could of just lied down in the nearest pasture and let the cows lick all the salt off me. MOO MOO!
There are other uses for farmers fields, right Perry.
Lets get into it. The first three kms were the slowest I think we have ever done. I was sitting on the back and the B group started to close the gap. Then the pace picked up and the downhill helped. The pack was close and a few guys were pulling at the front. Then Craig attacked and nobody reacted. I am sure the heat made that decision. The pack got back together and a few more attacks started to occur soon after. There was an attack on the top of the hill from Charlie which sped up the pack. Tony Frost went off the front and was hanging out there. I found myself slightly off the front with no one on my wheel. I worked with Tony and we got a very good gap from the pack. The two of us gave a very good effort and we stayed away until the hill in the headwind (one more lap to go). The pack turned the second corner and Westhaven did a very good rotation on the front leaving many to work in a cross wind. On the climb just before the third corner there was a crash. Four guys went down and they seemed to be alright as I passed them. There was a split in the pack now. Group A was gone around the corner with 5 or 6 guys in it. Group B was looking back at the crash and making sure everyone was OK. I caught up and passed Group B which then became the case group. Good work came from Brad, Tony, Craig V., and Kees chasing group A down. As the two groups merged there were a few choice words regarding etiquette while racing. There were attacks continuing until the last corner and then we had the head wind to contend with. We were doing 25kph with 3 kms to go. It was interesting say the least. There were a couple people swerving way too much and that needs to stop!
In the last 3kms I think I avoided three potential crash situations. In this heat we must make good decisions and be aware of others around you. The final sprint from my perspective was in very slow motion. I think Craig B. got first and Charlie second.
Please fill in areas that I did not see. :)
